Hailing from Brazil, award-winning clown, magician, and improvisor Ewerton Martin challenged himself to travel to 52 countries with only a deck of cards (and his red nose) in his pocket.

No stranger to the Fringe Festival circuit, Ewerton Martin (he/him) often lives out of a suitcase for months at a time.

“I’m on a mission to travel to 52 countries with a whole show that fits into a suitcase. Not just a suitcase – but a pocket. My only prop and set is this deck of 52 cards,” he smiles mischievously.

“Truly, it’s a bit poetic. I have the world in my hands and the show in my pocket,” Ewerton muses.

“My show is called El Diablo of the Cards. The Audience is all around me, they’re close, they can see everything. “I often give the deck of cards to the audience, and they shuffle it, and the magic happens in their hands. There’s no room for smoke or mirrors. It’s real magic!” proclaims Ewerton.

“Needless to say, I can’t go into casinos,” he winks.

Cheekiness aside, Ewerton’s theatre journey is one of continual discovery.

“I became a clown because I’m a bad actor,” Ewerton laughs. “Once I figured out that my path was clown, I started to have a fantastic time on stage.”

Take a chance on a show you’ve never heard of!

“A clown is the conscience of humanity,” Ewerton explains. “A clown is someone who comes to the stage to celebrate vulnerability. When you see a clown, the whole point is that you laugh and say: that person is just like me,” he continues. “When I put on the nose, I reveal more about myself.”

From Prague to Kingston, Ewerton has shared his special brand of clown and magic with audiences at more than 11 festivals worldwide over the years.

“I’m looking for connection – whether that’s through meeting new Artists across the Fringe circuit, or through connecting with Audiences.

With more than 200 unique shows to see at the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, it can be a daunting task to decide what to see first.

Ewerton offers some advice: “take a chance on a show you’ve never heard of!”
